Rusland 1932. Lara, een meisje vol dromen woont bij haar oom Ivan en tante Irina. Hoewel Lara goed kan leren, moet ze van school af om geld te gaan verdienen. Tante is werkster in het Alexander Paleis waar vroeger de laatste tsarenfamilie woonde. Als ze een keer een ongelukje krijgt gaat Lara met haar mee om te helpen. Er gaat een heel nieuwe wereld voor haar open als ze gaat ronddwalen in het prachtige Paleis. Op haar ontdekkingstocht komt ze terecht in de slaapkamers van de vier grootvorstinnen, de dochters van de tsaar. Daar vindt ze de dagboeken van Olga, de oudste dochter. Maar wat is toch dat gegiechel dat ze steeds hoort? Lara's leven krijgt een andere wending en familiegeheimen worden ontrafeld. Gelukkig is Boris er om met haar problemen te helpen.

Russia 1932. Lara, a girl with many dreams, is living with her uncle Ivan and her aunt Irina. Although Lara is an intelligent girl, she has to leave school in order to earn money. Aunt Irina is working as a cleaning woman in the Alexander Palace where the imperial family used to live. One day, when aunt Irina meets with a slight accident, Lara accompanies her to the palace in order to assist her with her job. A new world opens up for Lara, when she wanders about the beautiful palace. During her expedition, she finds herself in the bedrooms of the four Grand Duchesses, the daughters of the Tsar. There she comes across the diaries of Olga, the eldest daughter. But what about the giggling she keeps hearing? Lara's life changes course and family secrets are unveiled. Fortunately Boris is there to help her with her problems.

Het verhaal van de tsarenfamilie is al vaker verteld, maar nooit in contrast met het verhaal van een gewoon meisje uit het Rusland van 1932.

The story of the Russian imperial family has been told by many others but never as a contrast to the story of an ordinary girl from 1932 Russia.

Als klein meisje was ik al in de ban van het verhaal over de dochters van de laatste tsaar van Rusland. Op de foto's zag ik vier beeldschone meisjes in lange witte jurken met satijnen linten in hun haren die dromerig de camera inkeken. Ik kon bijna niet geloven dat ze vermoord zouden zijn tijdens de Russische Revolutie.

Voordat ik met schrijven begon, heb ik uitgebreid research gedaan. Al snel kwam ik erachter dat de tsarenfamilie het grootste deel van het jaar op het Alexander Paleis woonde. Na hun gedwongen vertrek naar Siberië zijn hun persoonlijke bezittingen achtergebleven en is het Paleis (tot op de dag van vandaag) opengesteld voor het publiek. Dit werd mijn vertrekpunt voor het verhaal over de hoofdpersoon Lara. Het verhaal van de tsarenfamilie is al vaker geschreven maar niet dat van een gewoon meisje uit het Rusland van 1932. Hoe zag het dagelijkse leven van een dertienjarige in die tijd eruit? Het viel niet mee om daar informatie over te vinden. Uiteindelijk is het gelukt met o.a. de hulp van in Nederland wonende Russinnen die deze tijd hebben meegemaakt.

Het verhaal dat over grootvorstin Olga wordt verteld is grotendeels gebaseerd op ware gebeurtenissen. Aan de hand van haar brieven en dagboeken en die van anderen uit haar nabije omgeving kwam de tsarenfamilie van de foto's voor mij “tot leven”. Olga was de oudste, ze sprak mij met haar directe karakter het meeste aan.

As a little girl I was already spellbound by the story of the daughters of the last Tsar of Russia. I saw photos of four stunningly beautiful girls in long white dresses with satin ribbons in their hair looking dreamy-eyed into the camera. I could hardly believe that they would be murdered during the Russian Revolution.

Before I started writing, I had carried out an extensive study. I soon found out that the imperial family lived in the Alexander Palace for most of the year. After their forced removal to Siberia their personal belongings were left behind and the Palace has been open to the public ever since. This became my starting point for the story of Lara, the principal character of the book. The sad history of the last imperial family has been written more than once, but not the story of an ordinary girl from 1932 Russia. What did daily life of a thirteen-year old look like at that time? It was not easy to find information about this. Finally I succeeded, among other things with the aid of some Russian women living in the Netherlands who were witnesses of that era.

The story about Grand Duchess Olga is mainly based on real life events. The imperial family as depicted in the photos ‘came to life’ on the basis of the letters and diaries of Olga, her family and acquaintances. Olga was the eldest, she appealed to me the most because of her direct nature.
